Why We Built Ama Lanka Gems
Sri Lanka has produced fine gemstones for more than two thousand years. The gem gravels of Ratnapura, in Sabaragamuwa Province, still yield some of the world's best sapphires, rubies and rare chrysoberyls, including the alexandrite and cat's eye that collectors prize. We grew up around this trade, and we know how a fine stone should be found, cut and sold.
We built Ama Lanka Gems as a single house rather than a marketplace. Every stone we offer is one we have handled, graded and stand behind. There is no line of resellers between the gem and you, and nothing about a stone that we will not say plainly: its species, its origin, its weight, its cut, and whether it has been heated.
The house shares its roots with Ama Lanka Tours, our family's travel company. The same island, the same name, the same standard of care. When you buy a stone from us, you are dealing with people who answer for it.
Ratnapura, the City of Gems
Most of our stones begin in Ratnapura, the centre of Sri Lanka's gem trade for as long as records exist. Its river valleys sit on ancient alluvial gravels that concentrate gemstones formed over millions of years, which is why Ceylon stones are known for their clarity and the purity of their colour. Much of the digging is still done by hand, mechanised mining is restricted by law, worked pits are restored, and the people who find these stones share fairly in their worth. We follow each gem from the ground, to the cutter's wheel, to your hand.

Graded by People Who Know the Stone in Your Hand
Every stone is examined by a qualified gemmologist before it reaches you. Our grading is led by Nissanka Samansiri, Gemologist at Ama Lanka Gems, with years spent handling Ceylon material at source. We then send the stone to an independent laboratory, so the final word on what it is comes from someone with nothing to sell.
A laboratory report confirms the species, the laboratory's opinion of origin, the weight, the cut and any treatment. It is not a valuation, and we will never present it as one. That honesty, on every stone, is the whole point of the house.
