Astrological and Jyotish Gemstones

In Jyotish, the Vedic astrological tradition, certain gemstones are associated with the planets, and blue sapphire (neelam) and yellow sapphire (pukhraj) are two of the most important. The tradition asks for natural, untreated stones, which is exactly what an independent report confirms. We supply the certified stone; the astrological guidance is yours to seek.

What Are Jyotish Gemstones?

Jyotish gemstones are the nine stones that Vedic astrology associates with the nine planetary influences, or grahas, worn in the belief that they strengthen a particular planet in a person's chart.

Jyotish is the astrological tradition of the Indian subcontinent, and in it each of the nine grahas, the seven classical planets plus the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, is linked to a specific gemstone. A practitioner reads a person's birth chart and may recommend a stone to support a given planet. The stones are traditionally worn set in a ring or pendant, in contact with the skin.

Our role is gemmological, not astrological. We do not read charts or prescribe stones, and we make no claim about astrological effects. What we can do, and do carefully, is supply the natural, correctly certified stone the tradition asks for, so that whatever guidance you follow, the stone itself is exactly what it is said to be.

Neelam: Blue Sapphire

Neelam is the blue sapphire, associated in Jyotish with Saturn. It is considered one of the fastest-acting and most carefully chosen stones in the tradition.

Blue sapphire is corundum coloured by trace iron and titanium, and Ceylon has long been its most celebrated source. In the tradition, neelam is usually recommended only after careful consideration, which is why practitioners place such weight on the stone being natural and unheated. A treated or synthetic stone is considered unsuitable, so an independent report stating no indications of heating is central to choosing a neelam.

This is where gemmology and tradition meet. Browse our blue sapphire collection, each stone natural and independently certified, and read how we certify every stone so you can confirm exactly what you are buying.

Pukhraj: Yellow Sapphire

Pukhraj is the yellow sapphire, associated in Jyotish with Jupiter. It is one of the tradition's most widely recommended stones.

Yellow sapphire is the golden variety of corundum, and Ceylon yellow sapphires are prized for their bright, clean colour. In Jyotish, pukhraj is often considered gentle and broadly auspicious, which is part of why it is so commonly chosen. As with neelam, the tradition asks for a natural, untreated stone, so certification matters just as much.

Gemstone by Planet and Purpose

In the tradition, a stone is chosen for the planet a practitioner wants to support in a birth chart, not by birth month, so the reading comes first and the stone follows.

This is the key difference from Western birthstones. A Jyotish stone is selected from a reading of the individual chart, which is why two people born in the same month might be guided to quite different gems. The choice is personal and belongs with a qualified practitioner, not with a seller.

What we can promise is the quality of the stone once it is chosen: natural, of good colour and clarity, unheated where the tradition asks for it, and confirmed by an independent laboratory. If you know the stone you need, we will help you find a fine, correctly certified example.

We Sell Stones, Not Astrological Advice

We are gemmologists, not astrologers. We do not read charts, prescribe stones or make any claim about astrological effects. What we provide is the natural, certified Ceylon stone the tradition calls for. For guidance on which stone to wear, please consult a qualified Jyotish practitioner.

I stay in my lane. I will not tell you which stone your chart calls for, but once you know, I will make sure the stone is exactly what it is said to be: natural, unheated where it must be, and independently certified. For an astrological stone, that authenticity is the whole point.
